What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an important part of managing your COPD and improving your overall quality of life. Rehabilitation programs typically partner you with a multidisciplinary care team. These programs are traditionally offered in hospitals, or virtually through partners like Vigor.

Pulmonary rehabilitation will help you get back to your normal life as soon as possible. The goals are to build your fitness so you can do your favorite activities again and to help you feel more comfortable when you breathe. To achieve these goals, your care team will develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs. The treatment plan typically includes a combination of physical exercise, an educational program that will give you support on how to understand and cope with COPD, and social and emotional support.

There are very few risks involved with pulmonary rehabilitation. When you first start, you may get short of breath and have sore muscles, but this should improve with regular exercise, which will be carefully monitored by qualified health coaches. Your pulmonary rehabilitation team is highly trained, and they’ll ensure that you get the best and safest treatment.
